Digital Signage – The Choices
Wherever you go today it’s likely that you will see some form of Digital Signage looking to attract your attention. The applications are almost limitless, from simple informational displays in places such as railway stations and airports right through to complex multi-window layouts that include live video in high end retail stores, digital signage can do it all.

But how do you go about deciding which system is right for you, which display do you need, what other hardware is needed and how do you add content then manage it, do you need any special licenses? There are many questions to answer and hopefully in this article we can shed some light on how you can make those decisions.

Stand Alone or Networked?
To begin let’s start with the basics; Initially let’s assume that you want a small number of display’s with each showing the same type of informational content. Typically this would be something like a menu board, conference schedule or timetable, it may just be a simple Powerpoint presentation played in a continuous loop.

To achieve this you will need a display and a simple set top player onto which you can load the required content. The critical decision is how you get the content onto the player. If the displays are operating in a standalone environment then you will need to have a means for loading the content onto the display each time you want to change it, normally this would be done by using a display with a built-in PC and transferring the content using a memory stick or similar.

That works fine but what if each display is in a different location and you need to change the content each morning? In that case you will want to connect each display to a network, so that you can remotely access the on-board PC and upload the new content. At this point your choice is all about what types of network do you want to use; IP, ISDN, 3G there are several to choose from and it depends on network availability at the display location as to which is the most suitable network for your application.
